In 2020, during the pandemic, like many people, I found myself slowing down and reflecting on a lot of things including how much time, energy, and maintenance I was dedicating to coloring my hair. At first, going gray was simply practical. Salons were closed, roots were growing in, and I really didn’t have much of a choice. But somewhere during that process, something shifted for me.
As the gray slowly came in, I began to see it differently. Instead of viewing it as something to hide, I started seeing it as authentic, natural, and honestly, freeing. For years, coloring my hair had just become part of my routine without me ever questioning it. I developed dermatitis and scalp was always irritated. Going gray made me realize how much pressure women often feel to look perpetually youthful.
I can’t begin to tell you how many women and men stopped me to compliment me on my hair.
The transition itself was definitely a journey. There were awkward stages, moments of doubt, and times I wondered if I should just color it again. But I kept going. I learned to be patient with the process and kinder to myself along the way. What surprised me most was how empowered I felt once I fully embraced it.
Today, I love my gray hair not just because of how it looks, but because of what it represents. It feels honest. It feels confident. I can’t begin to tell you how many women and men stopped me to compliment me on my hair. Some tell me, “You are so brave to go gray.” And oddly enough, I feel more like myself now than I did before.
I really have never had an issue with my age or aging. My mother passed away when she was 32 so every year after that age, I celebrate another year.
Being Cuban American was a little difficult with my family. My aunt would tell me that my husband would leave me if I went gray. My husband who is also grey. My Hispanic patients told me I would look tired and old. They have all come around, but you have to be secure. Once you start on this journey and know that you’re doing it for yourself and not for your Husband or others. My husband, by the way, has always been supportive.
What started as a circumstance during COVID turned into a personal decision about authenticity, self-acceptance, and letting go of the idea that aging is something to fight or hide.

After more than 30 years of coloring my hair every three weeks or so, I finally reached a point where I was ready to ditch the dye and reclaim a little piece of myself. I was exhausted by the constant hyper-fixation of wondering whether my gray roots were showing, planning my next time I would…

I used to dye my roots every 2 weeks, religiously. Yet secretly, I admired women with their beautiful gray hair. I looked at pictures online wishing/hoping that I had the “courage” to do it too. One day, after dyeing my hair, I said- this is the last time I’ll do it and that was it.…

I have hated aging for the longest time. Now that I am 58 I choose to embrace it! I see lots of silver goddesses out there and they look amazing! That’s why I decided to embrace my gray. You can look put together, beautiful and distinguished with silver hair.
