We all have that one person who unintentionally becomes our life coach, fashion critic, emotional support human, and accidental spiritual guru.
For me, that person is my daughter, Candice.
She is brilliant, funny, outspoken, wildly confident, and yes, adorably bossy. And honestly? I wouldn’t change one molecule of her. My life would be unrecognizable without her… and definitely far less entertaining.
Like me, my daughter started to go gray in her late 30’s. Unlike me, she handled it with inner peace.
Meanwhile, I was over here fighting every gray like it was a hostile takeover.
The Early Days: Enter Summer Blonde
I started coloring my hair in my teens, with my mother’s permission and the holy grail of home dye kits: Summer Blonde.
One rinse and, BAM, no longer a ‘dirty blonde’ I loved the look staring back at me in the mirror. Did I look natural? Debatable. Did I feel fabulous? Absolutely.
That was the beginning of the life-dye commitment. Roots? No way! Maintenance? Worth it. Blonde identity? Locked in.
Fast Forward: Salon Era + Denial
As I aged, my blonde needed reinforcements. highlights, lowlights toners, glosses, the full salon orchestra.
Then, just like that, gray roots arrived.
And not politely. Not slowly. No… they marched in like they owned the place.
My first reaction? Pluck. Panic. Repeat.
Meanwhile… my daughter was over there glowing.
Effortlessly. Boldly. Calmly embracing her natural silver while I was basically negotiating with my scalp like it was a hostage situation.
It wasn’t until my early 60s, after years of chemical warfare, that I finally surrendered.
I stopped dyeing.
And guess what showed up?
A LOT of gray. Not a sprinkle… not a polite shimmer. More like: SURPRISE! We brought friends!
My salon and I entered a new phase of the relationship: The great undoing…Operation Reverse Dye.
We tried blending. We tried streaking. We tried alchemy, prayer, and maybe witchcraft.
Eventually, bleaching the blonde to match the silver became the winning strategy. Trim by trim, appointment by appointment, the real me began emerging.
And then one day…
OMG, I LOOK AMAZING. Who knew SILVR could roar louder than blonde ever whispered?
To My Daughter:
Thank you for being my example before I knew I needed one, My mirror, my teacher, my truth-teller, And the woman whose confidence helped me find my own.
I love you more than words can ever say.
To Every Woman Reading This:
If you’re considering going silver… If you’re terrified of the grow-out… If society has told you age means fading…
Let me just say:
You couldn’t pay me to color my hair again. Not now. Not ever.
Silver isn’t aging, It’s liberating.
So come on, goddess…Go SILVR!
